What is CITES ? Part One.

What is CITES?
As an enforcement officer, this has been the question I have been asking to myself for the last half decade. Had it not been for the personal invitation of my Friend Mr. Lhendup Tharchen and Sonam Wangdi,  (to attend an in depth  training on CITES) I would have still been in the realm of obliviousness. I thank my Boss. Mrs. Yeshey Seldon, for consenting and agreeing to my proposal. Her approval has enabled me to represent my Department in the four day training (even though I missd one valuable day) and in the process allowed me to gain insignt as to What CITES and wildlfe are all about.

Since this is a very vast topic, I would like to share my experience with my readers in diferent parts. I hope my report will help every readers understand more about the consequences of unreasonable and lavish consuming of wildlife products in the form of 8 'F's. Namely: Food, Furniture, 'F'arma (medicines) Fuel, Fooder, Fashion, Fun and Folklore/fable.

I hope my report will also instill some sense of compassion in the heart of every individual for human are the total embodiment of compassion. As a human we know we have unmatched intelligence compared to the other species with whom we share our habitat. But at this juncture, let us also use our human intelligence in practically applying the concept of sustainability, durability and conservation when it comes to harvesting the wilflife products.

By the way the full form of CITES is: Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild life flora and fauna.

  1. This is going to be an important issue you will share with the readers. Particularly in this period, when developmental activities are in full swing in many corners of the world, lots of wild life be it flora or fauna are reported shifting towards risky zone in the IUCN Red List of Threatened wildlife, so CITES have a great role to play in regulating the flow of wildlife in international trade. This will inturn safeguard the resources for our near future.
looking forward your ideas and views, Aue Kuenzang. :)

  2. Thanks bro for visiting my blog.

I too think the protecting of wildlife, flora and fauna are the collective responsibility every individual worldwide.

That is why I am taking so much of my energy and time in sharing my knowledge on it (although I was trained for 3 days only)

  5. Hello Kuenzang jii,

I went through your blog and i am impressed by your forwardness to write such articles particularly on CITIES. You have made it brief to the readers.

One thing i wanted to draw your attention is in para second in the bold letters. CITIES does not just deal with endangered species but with all. Do you remember, we had the same question on this issue. I made the mistake on the first day and at the end of training i had to correct it.

The other thing is about the CITIES form. I remember we were told that there will be only 3 types of transaction forms i.e import, export and re-export. So you may once again confirm it.

Hope you will not mind me sharing these comments. Good luck for the endevour you have just started, to prevent illegal wildlife trade.

    Thanks

  6. Dear Kuenzang jii,

I read your post and i am impressed that you took such a great step to protect our wild wealth.

I just wanted you to cross check some lines in bold in second para. I have a faint memory particularly on this issue as we also had the specific question. I had a wrong answer on the first day and on the last day i had to correct it. We were made to understand that CITIES deals with all the species not just endangered species.
And the other thing is that, i remember we were being told that there are 3 types of CITIES permit i.e import, export and re-export. You have also mentioned re-import.

Hope you will not mind me sharing comments for your post. Please just cross check. And you have done a wonderful job. Thumbs up for you.

    Thanks
